Deafness

Mine is the quiet world

of a muffled drum;

sounds and noises come,

but form indecipherable

patterns in the lucid air

Odd that tempers are lost;

voices raised impatiently

at the hearing aid.

Shouting never made

it any easier to bear

this shut-out world

of puzzling laughter
